NOW RUZ the Persian New Year is the only scientific New Year celebrated in the world today. It is celebrated exactly at the moment in time when the vernal equinox takes place. Now Ruz has crossed all religious and national boundaries and is celebrated by all the people that once formed the great Persian Empire. Religions that originated in Iran after the Islamic invasion, namely the Bahai religion and the Ismaili Muslims have both incorporated Now Ruz into their religion.
Now Ruz is made up of two Persian words, Now meaning New and Ruz meaning Day. The question that should arise is; why is the New Year called New Day? However, nobody raises that question for it has gradually taken the form of a proper name.
NOW RUZ is symbolically represented by the NOU ROUZ TABLE which is called Haft Seen by some and Haft Sheen by others and still others call it Haft Seene or Seven Trays.
The table is arranged with seven items starting with the letter 'S" or 'SH' or just random symbolic items arranged in Seven Trays.
Whatever the school of thought and whatever the items on the table all of them represent a positive philosophy which is deeply rooted in the ancient Iranian culture. Of course the real Philosophy which due to religious constrains has been camouflaged is a very enlightened philosophy, one which the intellectual world can relate to. It is the philosophy which was also symbolically given as gifts to baby Jesus by the Wise Men from the east, the Magi's. The interpretation of which can be clearly read in the Bible.
If the world would understand the philosophy behind the Nou Rouz Table, this universal law and see the truth behind it, without giving it a religious spin, the world will be a better place.
